Going back to school can be hard. It’s a time commitment to your already busy schedule. And for what? A pretty piece of paper with your name on it? That sounds less than ideal. Yet there is a way to learn what you want on your own time.

Time to go back to school! Not the early-wake-up-pass-a-test-type-of-class though. No way! These classes are done on your own time and on your own schedule. Convenient for all of those with busy schedules, myself included.

So how can you take classes that will help benefit your writing craft? My top pick starts on Coursera!

My Favorite Writing Classes:

I have taken several writing courses through Coursera. In the prep season for NaNoWriMo 2018, Wesleyan University offered a specialized set of classes for writers. Now, you can no longer take those classes until they are offered again, probably around NaNoWriMo prepping season.

However, the full-length versions of these classes are available RIGHT NOW!

Creative Writing Specialization

This is the overall course. You complete assignments that are peer-graded for a pass/fail grade. You earn a certificate if you complete the four courses and the capstone class. Below, I’ll share in detail the courses in this class.

Creative Writing: The Craft of Plot Course

Instructor: Brando Skyhorse

Wondering how to better your plot? Well, this class is perfect for you! Brando Skyhorse is a published author who takes the time to speak in-depth about the topic of plot. His assignments push students to better their writing by pushing outside of comfort zones.

Creative Writing: The Craft of Character Course

Instructor: Amy Bloom

I find myself struggling when it comes to putting characters onto the page. So I knew I needed to take this class. I learned a lot about characters and how to write them for the reader to resonate with the character. However, I feel like Amy Bloom is a more distant professor than the others. There is a lack of explanation of why and more just do it attitude with her. I found the class useful but it’s more of a self-taught class.

Creative Writing: The Craft of Setting and Description Course

Instructor: Amity Gaige

Setting and description happen to be my favorite parts to write in a story. I figured I should take this class to help better myself. Amity Gaige does a fantastic job of teaching and having students build a realistic world for readers.

Creative Writing: The Craft of Style Course

Instructor: Salvatore Scibona

I’ll be honest, I was going to skip this class. I mean, who is able to teach someone their own personal style? Well, Salvatore Scibona made me glad I took this class. I learned so much about crafting my own unique style and building my skills as a writer. I couldn’t be more grateful to have learned how to write and edit during this class.

These classes have all helped me better my writing skill in ways I didn’t even think was possible. Whether you take the entire specialization or only a single class, you are going to improve your writing.

My Favorite Part About Coursera?

Coursera is easy to use and a community-driven educator. With courses taught by professors from esteemed colleges, you know that you’re receiving a quality education.  Many classes are inexpensive, but Coursera provides financial aid and free audits for those that need help but want to learn new skills.

Coursera is an inclusive educator that wants what is best for the student. Check out these great writing classes for #writers! Share on X

  1. I love writing courses! Well I love writing books maybe better. I love to pick the brain of the writer and see what techniques they use and then I totally work in what seems to work for me too. I love the idea of these, especially the plotting and style course. ❤️
