It’s time for a new book review on a book marketing book. When I first started my self-publishing journey, I came across How I Sold 80,000 Books by Alinka Rutkowska. It may be many years later, but I’ve finally gotten around to reading it.
With my upcoming release of Speaking the Truth of Connections, I knew I wanted to up my book marketing game. So I picked up this book and got to reading. And then read it so fast I was done the next day. Now let me share with you my thoughts on this book.
How I Sold 80,000 Books
Goodreads Synopsis: If you plan on self-publishing through amazon and you are looking for book marketing tips, “How I Sold 80,000 Books” is for you.
It will show you all the steps you need to implement to get readers, what type of book marketing for authors works, kindle publishing guidelines and best practices.
Author marketing is something that can be learnt if you have the right tools. You will find my “4Ps” system, which allowed me to sell 80,000 books in this guide.
Taking time to learn more about marketing before a new release is important. There are so many little details that can slip your mind so a refresher is always nice. That’s how I feel about this book. It’s a nice refresher for the little things you can forget before a release.
Writing Style
I like the simplicity of Alinka’s voice throughout the book. There is a conversational tone to the writing. The writing makes me want to keep reading and listening to what is on each page.
The Information
I found that a lot of the information is extremely useful. Alinka goes into detail about the marketing process and some options you can pursue when marketing your book. It opens your mind to the world of book marketing and gives you the tools to dive into the options available.
Alinka goes in-depth with the 4Ps of Marketing and with each one, provides useful links and information you can use to put you on track for marketing your own book. For example, there are mentions of using Facebook Groups to help on your journey. She lists out some groups and provides the link to check out the group.
Now, I have the 2017 edition of the book. With that, I noticed some of the information to be old and not fit well for 2024. There have since been updates to the book, so if you are to get this book now, I’m sure that this won’t be an issue.
The Formatting
This one bothered me the most. Everything feels off-center and some pages/text are not formatted correctly. Spacing is off between lines and sometimes words. There are also times where the headings are indented too much.
How I Sold 80,000 Books is a wonderful refresher book to keep on hand every time you’re about to release a book. The information within the pages is abundant. I know I’ll be checking out this book a lot in the future. The book is a quick and easy read that allows you to take in the information then apply it to your own book marketing. I look forward to testing the waters and trying some new concepts in my book marketing strategy.
