It’s time for the last writing prompt of 2019! This last year has been a fun adventure writing in many genres that I thought would be impossible. I learned a lot about myself and my own writing style throughout this writing challenge.
The best part? I’ll be doing it all again next year! That’s right! I’ve gathered a whole new list of prompts that I’ll be writing to next year with the added category of a specific character trait. I’ll explain more in the first writing prompt post going live in 2020!
After last month’s odd writing prompt of a western in a scrap yard, I am happy to be back at a genre that I had a lot of fun writing the beginning of this year. I mean writing about a queen’s coronation celebration with fantasy characters is pretty fun. Now it’s time to finish the 2019 writing prompts with one last fantasy scene.
Writing Prompt: Write a 400-500 word fantasy scene where the characters go to the movies.

Let the Movie Play Jarzan!
Written by Jennifer Leigh
Lightning bugs light the thin screen set up on the tallest oak tree in our woods. It’s the one night of the year that we’re allowed the freedom to stay awake past the last rays of sun that shines on our village.
For decades, the Descendants kept careful watch of the youth. They always believed that our rambunctiousness would lead to their demise. Then when the New Age Descendants took over, our balled-up energy was allowed release. But only one day a year.
It’s the last day that the sun will set at its earliest. Tomorrow, we will earn back the sun one minute at a time. But tonight, we celebrate.
Alba fiddles with the thin sheet that has become our makeshift movie screen for the night.
“Would you leave it alone? You’re going to scare the nymphs and fairies away.” I rub his floppy ear.
He backs away from the screen. “The film will look wrinkled if I don’t smooth out the sheet. But if you insist on leaving it as it is, I will walk away my lady.”
“Oh Alba, I thought we were friends. Now you’re calling me my lady now?” I laugh and pull him toward me.
He smiles. “It’s been some time since we’ve been together outside of the Musland.”
A fairy, our friend Lydia, flutters on my shoulder. “I’ve secured the nourishments for tonight’s activities, Alyx. Are we ready to start the movie? Jarzan says he’s crafted an excellent show about the war with the humans and I can’t wait to watch.” She jumps in the air clapping her hands.
I let out a laugh. “That sounds excellent. Almost better than the last one about the fight with the mermaids.”
This has both Lydia and Alba laughing.
“Time to get started. We shouldn’t waste our free night chattering about,” Alba pulls my arm toward the log in front of the screen.
We sit and Lydia passes down the finest popped corn the Musland can offer. I know better than to ask how she received such a gift.
“Let the movie play Jarzan.”
I love the light tone this scene plays. I’m sure that this story would be an excellent longer story.
Happy Writing!
