Broken Ties is one of those novellas that really draws you in and keeps you wanting more. After reading the entire Mentalist series, you can read my review of The Mentalist trilogy here, I knew that I needed more of this series.
Broken Ties
Author: Kenechi Udogu
Series: The Mentalist Series #0.5
Genre: YA Fantasy / Romance
Publication Date: May 13, 2014
My Rating: 4 pens!
Goodreads Synopsis: “There was nothing unusual about the night everything changed. No flashing lights in the sky, no searing fire in my belly; no sign whatsoever to suggest the shift which was to come…Nora Brice did strange things to me. Strange and awful things…”
Paul Colt has a problem, and it is not one most teenage boys face. Yes, he likes a girl; one he’s pretty certain he’ll do foolish things for, given the chance. But he can’t go after her, or any other girl for that matter. That’s what he gets for being an Averter; forced to toe the line for the propagation of the collective. He knows some rules are okay to trifle with, and there are some which should never be broken. The gravest of them all?
Don’t fall in love.
Ever.
This is the story of how Paul breaks that rule.
Topics and Triggers: first love, rule breaking, mind manipulation

I received a copy of Broken Ties from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
*There may be SPOILERS if you haven’t read The Mentalist Series*
This novella provides a unique aspect of Gemma’s dad when he was 16. I love seeing this aspect of her dad as a young Averter. Also getting to meet Gemma’s mom and seeing her fall in love with Paul is so cute!
Let’s get to the review!
-
Paul & Nora POV
This novella is written from the POV’s of Paul and Nora. I like that we are able to see both of their sides as the story unfolds. Both sides to be cute as they come together. I also like the innocence that each chapter shows. Using the dual POV for this works really well for the story.

Knowing the Ending
Being that I read The Mentalist series before reading this novella, I knew what happened between Paul and Nora. Although to some, it may be a spoiler, it actual made me more anxious to know what really happened between Paul and Nora. I think it makes it sweeter. You know what happens in the end, but the events leading up to that are a mystery in the series and this novella catches you up.

Not the Whole Story
Now, this novella doesn’t complete Paul and Nora’s story. It’s only by inferences that you can fill in the gap left between the series and this novella. Although it’s a good place to end, I really yearned for more of their story.
Broken Ties is a cute story that shows you another side of Paul that you don’t see in the series. I like the way it’s told in POV’s and knowing the ending before reading made the story that much sweeter. I wish that the novella completely filled the gap between Paul and Nora, but where it left off was a cute finish. This novella was a great addition to the Mentalist series.

This is definitely one of those novellas. It clears up so much uncertainty about Gemma’s dad which makes you understand his motives behind some things.
