I received a copy of The Sugar Mill from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I had a great time reading this collection and here’s why.
The poems are written in modern free-verse style. This is my favorite poetry style, so I enjoyed the layout of the poems. I also like the way that the poem length ranged from short to long.
The poems in this collection deal with topics of growing up, and being in love, with aspects of addiction, and sexual assault. I found many of the poems to be relatable to me, but not all of them. This isn’t a problem, but I found that the emotional connection played a big role in my enjoyment of some of the poems.
The first half of the collection felt like an emotional blockage. I didn’t really feel the emotion behind the beginning poems. However, as the collection continues, I found myself on an emotional journey with the authors.
I love when poetry collections have drawings! These all fit the poems perfectly and added a bit of depth to the poems.
Overall, The Sugar Mill is a sweet poetry collection about growing up and being in love. The free verse style of the poems makes them easy to read and relate to. Although I did find a lack of emotion in the beginning to affect my enjoyment of early poems, I still really enjoyed this collection.

I’m normally not one to pick up a poetry book, but I like that this one has graphics in it. Adds a bit of personality to it.

I’m not really a poetry lover, but looks good. Great title.
Poetry is not for everyone so I understand.
Sweet enough to cause cavities
That’s one way to put it! 😂
I love it! Although I have to say, when I saw “celebration of the self and all forms of intimacy” I thought the poems were going to be a bit more explicit. I love the pictures.
