I love writing love stories! There, I said it. I’ve become a sap the older I’ve gotten and now all I want to do is write about two people falling in love. Take my January Writing Prompt as Exhibit One. Why haven’t I written a full-length romance novel? Honestly, I don’t even know!

But we’re not here to talk about my writing projects (I have plenty). We are discussing the July Romance Writing Prompt! If you haven’t already guessed:

Genre: Romance

Setting: A College Campus

After last month’s Dystopian Bookshop Prompt, this light and airy scene is exactly what I need to refuel my creative juices. I can’t wait for you to meet Savannah and Nathan in today’s college campus scene. Let’s get the romance on!

Scenes by Jennifer Leigh is a new segment in 2019 where the scenes have been picked using a random number generator and will be around 400-500 words. I started with a numbered list of different genres and settings I thought would be fun to write about. Then I randomly selected 12 numbers for genres and 12 number for settings. From that list, I found out what my writing prompts were for the year which you can find the list by going to my Fiction Writing tab!

And if you’d like to join and follow these prompts, I’d love for you to link me to your stories either in the comments or via email (boundtowriting@gmail.com) and I’ll showcase your amazing pieces in next month’s post!

Will You Walk Me To Class?

Written by Jennifer Leigh

My psychology class lets out five minutes late. I don’t stay and talk with Angel or Cassie. Instead, I dart across campus, knowing that I’m wasting precious time.

I arrive in the Quad five minutes later. I bite my lip.

He’s sitting at one of the tables facing away from me. His curly brown hair blows in the wind. He taps his pen against the green picnic table. Then he looks around until he spots me. A smile spreads across his face and he motions me to him.

I smile back and begin to shuffle through the clusters of other students. Some are eating, and others are hard at work studying. I hold my backpack tight, the weight of two textbooks weighing me down. He watches me the entire time.

“Your psych professor go off on another serial killer tangent?” He says as I sit next to him.

I nod. “She’s always analyzing the psychological behavior of serial killers. That was her thesis after all.”

He nudges me. “Speaking of, have you figured out your thesis topic yet?”

I laugh. “It’s a lot harder than you think. I’ve been between three topics and I still don’t know which one to choose.”

“I can make it easier for you.” He leans toward me.

I move closer. “How?”

His soft lips touch mine and I kiss him right back. We pull away, both breathless.

“That doesn’t solve my thesis problem.” I lean into him.

He wraps his arm around me. “No, but it did solve my kissing problem.”

I play punch him in the ribs and he sneaks a kiss on my cheek

We set up our homework for PreCalculus, the worst required class ever. Lucky for us, we’re in the same class. Nathan always balances out my lack of math skills. Though I definitely help him out in the critical thinking department.

I check the time on my cell phone. “It’s 3 o’clock, you’re going to be late.”

“Professor Stevenson doesn’t take attendance. I’ll be fine.” He starts putting his homework away one piece at a time.

I frantically pull my homework together and stuff it in my backpack. “Let me walk you to class.”

Shock spreads across his face. “You walk me to class?” I can hear the joking in his voice.

“Watch or I’ll punch you again.”

He puts his hands in the air. “No need to be violent Savannah.”

We laugh. He links his fingers through my hand and we walk down the large sidewalk, past the brick buildings all the way to Nathan’s next class.

“Meet me in the lobby after class?” He asks, his brown eyes big.

I kiss him in response.

This love story makes my heart so happy. I hope you had just as much fun reading this. Or if you wrote your own scene, I hope you had fun! I look forward to sharing next month’s writing prompt with you.
