Top 5 Tips on Getting Book Reviews

12 Comments on Top 5 Tips on Getting Book Reviews

Let’s set the scene. You’ve worked for days/months/years on your book. Paid for an editor and a cover designer. You’ve even created a marketing plan. Yet you’re still struggling for book reviews.

It’s one thing to get people to buy your book, but to get them to make the extra effort to write up a 2+ word review on Amazon or other retailers. It’s hard. But something you need to keep in mind is that not everybody thinks of leaving reviews.

I’ve spent some time thinking about how I’ve gotten book reviews on my debut book, Not Like Everyone Else. And with my new book, The Stranger I Knew, releasing next month, I’m already starting my marketing plans.

So what are my tips for getting book reviews? Let me tell you!

Top 5 Tips for Getting Book Reviews

TIP #1: Join a Book Tour

Book tour companies are there to help you promote your book. Though they do cost money to help, it is one way to ensure you receive book reviews for your new book. Always do your research before spending money on a book tour. And make sure you select the package that meets your wants and needs when it comes to your marketing plan.

The best way to find a book tour company that meets your needs is by Googling “book tour company”.

I have exciting news to share soon about this particular topic. But I’m not ready to divulge just yet. Stay tuned for a future post!

TIP #2: Reach Out to Book Bloggers

Book bloggers are an awesome community of bookish loving people. As part of the book blogging community, I can say that these people are the kindest and most loving people I’ve ever befriended. So go ahead and reach out to them.

Make sure to visit their Review Policy first. You don’t want to waste your time or their’s by not listening to what they want from you before accepting your book for review.

TIP #3: Have Family Tell Friends

Word of mouth is one of the best forms of marketing. Honestly, it’s the one that’s made the most sales for me so far. So get your family and friends to tell their family and friends. It’s a cycle of getting people your trust to put your book in the hands of others. One that works pretty well. So go ahead and start the cycle.

TIP #4: Find Niche Facebook Groups

You’ll need some more people in your corner and Facebook groups are a perfect way to find your people. Facebook groups are good for all types of needs, so find the ones that work for you.

In my Facebook Writing Groups post, I discuss my favorite Facebook groups for book blogging and writing. You can meet new friends this way and writing friends are the best to have in this line of work.

TIP #5: Scream to the Void (Someone will hear you)

Okay, so maybe this isn’t a tip, but hear me out. Much of blogging and being an author feels like you’re screaming into the internet void. Maybe people hear you, but they never like or comment on your post. But there are people that see your posts and will act even if they never do like or comment. So keep on posting and loving your work. Even if it doesn’t feel like it’s useful because it is!

Go out there are start making some noise. Your book deserves to be heard and we want to hear about your book! Happy promoting!

  1. This is a great list Jenn! Actually I love your last one the most even though the first two are the most sensical. Because I find that to be so true! I get a lot of views and I know some are spammers but I know many are people who lurk around and read but don’t comment or like! It’s a real thing. ❤️

    1. Thanks, Dani! ❤ it’s hard to not want to give up when you feel like you’re talking to yourself, but people are listening which I think is really important to keep in mind.

  2. Ooh, solid tips, Jenn!

Blogger databases are also helpful in finding book bloggers who read the genre of your books! And I recently discovered BookSirens—it’s great for getting reviews too. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Shruti!
I forgot about blogger databases and I belong to a few. 🤦‍♀️I’m definitely going to have to check BookSirens out! Thanks for the tip!
